| SHE'S THE DJ, I'M THE DJ |
July 27th |
The Rocker |
Two of Winnipeg's female DJs, Mama Cutsworth and Mizz Brown, are throwing a dance party this summer you won't wanna miss. On Friday, July 27th,
music fans will be flocking to one of the city's newest venues, "The Rocker" (3rd floor of 91 Albert St.) to revel the night away at SHE'S THE DJ, I'M THE DJ.
This dance floor slammer will be one of the few places where folks can flip out over solid dance music - from gritty funk and dirty disco, to old school hip hop and
contagious latin music - all played on strictly 100% vinyl! Both women are fiendish record collectors and have dug up some gems for the night. Don't be surprised if
you hear Motown slapped over New-Jack Swing beats, or Blues samples overtop salsa music. These two are outta control! |
| Grand
Analog CD Release for "Calligraffiti" |
July 13th |
The Pyramid |
Slo Coach, ILL Rap Jam, and UMFM
proudly present Grand Analog's CD release party for his debut album "Calligraffiti"
@ The Pyramid, July 13. Opening the night will be local favorites Shadez,
Gruf, Nestor Wynrush, & Voldis. Dj Co-op will be making your feet involuntarily
move to rhythms all night. Show starts at 9:30pm. Grand
Analog is aiming to be on stage by 11:45. Don't miss out. $5 for entry
, $10 for entry plus CD. Grand analog is Odario Williams of Mood Ruff. The
music is a beautiful mess of rap'n'roll, dub, and soul; a hip hop slop shop
of times good and bad. Calligraffiti: for the tired heavy heart, ridden
with struggle and happiness. Hope to see you all there. This is an event
that can't be missed. |
| my!gay!husband! |
June 30th |
The Collective |
In an historic merger, two of Winnipeg's promotional
juggernauts have teamed up to present one of Vancouver's hottest party-rocking
DJs: my!gay!husband!
Mike B, or DJ Fontcrimes as he is know to the legions of hipsters who attend
his weekly Good Form indie dance party, has been promoting shows for as
long as anyone on the scene can remember under the names You as the Driver
and All Star Recess, to name but a few. DJ Co-op has been throwing dance
parties with his partner-in-crime DJ Hunnicutt, for just as long and is
also known for being part of the now-legendary ILL RAP JAM movement. Together,
they are pleased to facilitate the first Winnipeg appearance by my!gay!husband!,
a rare "anti-dj deejay" who can hold his own next to any "hipster" deejay
and bring a smile to the most bored out coolkid face. A reckless Vancouver
punkpunkparty kid with a tendency for loud music and large drinks, my!gay!husband!
has built a rep over the last 4 years for trashy mixes and playing with
everyone from Interpol, MSTRKRFT, Hollertronix, Uffie, Nina Hagen, Chromeo,
T.V. On the Radio, Ted Leo, Cut Copy, DJ Assault, Mike+Andy of the Smiths,
and a million other well to do indie darlings. In addition to DJ sets by
Mike B and Co-op, the evening features Winnipeg/Toronto selector twenty/twenty,
fresh off playing a listening party for uber-hip French electronic label
Ed Banger. Indie darlings the paperbacks will open up the evening. Advance
Tix $10 @ Music Trader and ticketworkshop.com.
Brought to you by Better Swimmers, DJ
Co-op and UMFM 101.5! |

making a steady rise to the upper echelons of the minimal/micro scene's

in the funky, minimal sounds of German tech-house, but is tempered with
a heady dose of the ethereal and experimental, resulting in a unique sound

Electric Co. |
October 16th |
The West
End |
Jason Molina is a tenor guitar-wielding songwriter from
the shores of Lake Erie, who for years fronted the amazing Songs:Ohia. Though
there is a sonic similarity to the oft-compared Will Oldham, Molina's ardent,
soul-searching lyrics are more aptly compared to Neil Young or Leonard Cohen.
Always a songwriter, Molina eventually decided to perform and record solo
with help as needed. The first Songs:Ohia full-length arrived in 1997; released
on the Secretly Canadian label, the self-titled album garnered critical
acclaim. Ten albums later, Molina decided to switch gears and formed the
Magnolia Electric Company. Named after the last full-length Songs:Ohia album,
the new band plays songs about finally accepting one's place in this world;
about standing ground and owning up to it with confidence. Tickets are only

Smith and sows them into a curtain of sorrow, catharsis and ultimately,
grace. One-man band Matt Arbogast's graveled voice mats the frantic strumming

Gunshy will be appearing alongside Little Buddy, and Twisty of the D
Rangers. Tickets are only $4.99 at the door. Doors at 7:30PM, show at 8PM. |

March 4 |
Galaxy
Skateland |
That's right party people, influenced by the classic
De La Soul song, DJ Co-op
and DJ Hunnicutt present their first official party of 2006! A ROLLER SKATING
JAM NAMED "SATURDAYS!" goes down SATURDAY, MARCH 4th, 2006 at the historical
GALAXY SKATELAND
(595 Portage Ave) from 10pm to 1am, tickets, including skate rental are
only $9.99 at the door! After years of rumors and dashed expectations, Winnipeg's
favorite DJs are officially taking their legendary dance party formula and
putting it on wheels! Anticipation is already at a feverish high for the
jam. Expect the usual mix of the Co-op/Hunnicutt "anything goes" sound,
but with a lean towards the disco/funk and 80s jams synonymous with the
roller skating experience. Party people are encouraged to bring their own
roller skates or roller blades. And don't worry, for those who aren't roller-inclined,
regular-type dancing will be allowed in the middle of the rink. The night
will also feature a kick ass after-party . . . That's right! Two jams for
the price of one! Co-op and Hunnicutt have secured a top-secret location
for an all-night after party? All the party people in attendance at A Roller
Skating Jam Named "Saturdays" will be given a flyer that gives them the
location and free admission to the after-party. |
| The
Most Serene Republic |
The
Pyramid |
Fresh off a couple of great Winnipeg supporting shows
in the fall of 2005, the Most Serene Republic. The band makes conventional
indie rock, shiny and happy at first, with its majestic piano arrangements
dancing around angst-ridden guitar riffs and warm harmonies. Their debut,
Underwater Cinematographer isn't your quintessential debut album. It's too
complex, too inquisitive, and too ambitious. Joining them will be a couple
of great up and coming bands from down east, the Acorns and In Flight Safety.
Ticket details to follow. |

the difficulties trying to reach his "cousin", David Geffen. The Hong Kong
based Emma Segal will link up via satellite to perform live on an overhead
projector and Vancouver singer songwriter, Leah Abramson, opens the show.

BROOD |

Times
Change(d) |

Kentucky-hardcore acoustic guitar and somber, achingly confessional vocal
harmonies. Seriously, it's all of that and so much more . . . it's that
damn good. Tickets will be available at the door! |

| Petkau Farewell |
Friday, November 18 |
The Royal Albert |
One of Winnipeg's hardest-working musicians is leaving
town for a while, and plans to celebrate with a blast-off rock show at The
Albert. Mike Petkau: crafty songsmith, prolific producer, touring road warrior,
and all-around nice guy (his words, not mine) is moving to Montreal. He's
toured the nation back and forth steadily for the last 2 years. He's produced
and/or engineered character-filled albums for Mahogany Frog, Darren Day,
Chris Neufeld, Cat Jahnke, Old Seed, House of Doc as well as the upcoming
Twilight Hotel album. He's been enthralled with the challenge of blending
his art-rock ideals with more traditional songwriters, and thus his work
as a producer has been groundbreaking for local acts. So, to cap off a productive
four years in Winnipeg, Mike is assembling a cast of new and old friends
for November 18th's send-off show with a decided punk-rock edge to it...
not only will Petkau be performing with his full band, he'll also be sharing
the stage with Anthem Red, Doug McLean, front man for The Paperbacks & Bonaduces
in a rare solo performance, as well as Ian La Rue. Tickets are only $6.00
at the door. |

August 30th |
The West End |
On Tuesday, August 30, 2005, The
West End Cultural Centre will host a special benefit concert for local
singer/songwriter JP Hoe,
who was the victim of a recent theft. Immediately following his well-received
concert at Old Market Square as part of The Winnipeg Fringe Festival, someone
stole Hoe's two main guitars from their stand, backstage. Currently putting
together demo recordings for his anticipated full length debut CD and planning
fall tour dates, the struggling independent musician faces the daunting
task of replacing his main instruments, and so a group of friends and fans
have put together a benefit show to help pay for guitars, because The Hoe
Must Go On. The night will feature a set by JP
Hoe and his backing band, The Truly Richards, which is comprised of
members of local pop/rock band Quinzy. Hoe's powerful voice and captivating
stage presence have been cultivated over years of performing, starting with
a role in Les Miserables at a young age. Working in theatre and bands helped

play that should be one of the highlights at the 2005 Winnipeg Fringe Festival.
Showing nightly at 7PM, Grow-Op shows a world where we are spoon-fed our
impressions. Today the words GROW OP has connotations of biker gangs, drug
lords and innocent neighborhoods taken over by dens of sin-innocent, peaceful
homes turned into hot houses in the pursuit of criminal gain. But past the
veil of crime, there are thousands who indulge in indoor horticultural practices
for a different purpose. Come down and meet Lilly Sprout . . . Botanist,
gardener, activist. Her reasons for cultivation don’t match the nightly
news headlines. Join her every evening at Rag Pickers, 216 McDermot, at

gun-toting aging rock stars and the hydro meter. |

| Magnolia Electric Co. |
Wednesday, May 11th |
The West End |
Jason Molina is a tenor guitar-wielding songwriter from
the shores of Lake Erie, who for years fronted the group Songs: Ohia. Though
there is a sonic similarity to the oft-compared Will Oldham, Molina's ardent,
soul-searching lyrics are more aptly compared to Neil Young or Leonard Cohen.
Named after the last full-length Songs: Ohia
album, the new band plays songs about finally accepting one's place in this
world; about standing ground and owning up to it with confidence. Local
